Community - Library

Listen to recordings of Andrew Fellows' seminars on the need and role of communities in today's fragmented world. Andrew Fellows was the director of the L'Abri community in England from 1995 to 2015 ( https://www.englishlabri.org ). The community in L'Abri was one of our inspirations for the birth of the Baraka residential community project at the CSLewisa Bilingual Gymnasium in Bratislava.

Why Community?

Text from the introduction by Štev Machajdík on the topic of Summer Stay 2020

Our living space has changed in recent years. And it has changed very quickly. Our communities, whatever we think of them as, seem to be unable to keep up. They are unable to keep up with the fast-paced lifestyle, constant change, technology, the globalized world, fragmentation, individualization, artificial intelligence, virtuality, global threats.

Moreover, modern prophets come who say that what we once considered our community, living space, home, group, identity... is already outdated and offer us various visions of a new future. Whether it is a utopian future of an absolutely free individual who will freely choose his values, faith, gender, race, living space and others will have to respect him willy-nilly. Or a retrotopic future of a revived "glorious past ", when god and nation ruled over an unfree but safe individual.

“More than ever before in history, humanity stands at a crossroads. One path leads to despair and utter hopelessness. The other to utter extinction. Let us hope that we are wise enough to choose the right one,” writes Woody Allen in the book “ Side Effects.” Or as Umberto Eco called his book, “ From Stupidity to Madness.” And we are just as free to choose which path is which.

In the noise of the culture war that rages at all levels of society, in recent years a quiet voice has been heard by a few wise people (Brooks, Peck, Bauman, Fellows, Buber and others) who are trying to draw people's attention to the importance of Community. Community as a space where authentic people meet other authentic people. And where at the same time two fundamental inseparable processes unique to humans take place. Knowing myself and knowing the other, where in a never-ending process I change Myself so that I can be closer to You. This secret of Community cannot be transferred to virtuality, politics or technology. This is possible only in Community. We would like to invite you to think about such a community.

"...If you want to imagine the future, imagine a boy, his dog, and his friends. And a summer vacation that never ends. And if you really want to imagine the future, imagine a shoe... no, imagine a sneaker with an untied shoelace that kicks a pebble, imagine a piece of wood suitable for poking interesting things, as well as for throwing to a dog that can decide whether to bring it or not. Imagine a fake whistle that turns some popular tune into a tangle of notes. Imagine a figure - half angel, half devil, and all human... With an expression full of hope, they are trudging homeward... forever."

Terry Pratchett, Good Omens, 1992
